Stop Payment Notice
Definition
On a California public works job, a claimant who has not been paid cannot record a lien against public property. Instead it can serve a stop payment notice on the public entity, asking it to withhold money owed to the contractor. Lien waivers release stop payment notice rights along with lien and payment bond rights.
