Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JamFile and the public works forms it fills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is JamFile?

JamFile is an online service for California public works contractors. You enter your company and each project once, and its AutoFiler fills in the DAS-140, DAS-142, preliminary notices and the four statutory lien waivers from them, then downloads, emails or mails each form by USPS. JamFile is run by Dependent Media.

Which forms does JamFile fill?

Nine: the DAS-140 (Public Works Contract Award Information) and DAS-142 (Request for Dispatch of an Apprentice); three preliminary notices (Form 119 and the 20-day preliminary notice for public works, and the 20-day preliminary notice for private works); and the four statutory lien waivers from Civil Code sections 8132 to 8138, conditional and unconditional, for a progress payment or the final payment.

How much does JamFile cost?

You get 10 free forms when you sign up, with no card. After that you buy credits: 10 credits for $29.99 ($3.00 a form) or 25 credits for $59.99 ($2.40 a form). There is no subscription, and credits never expire.

When is a credit used?

The first time you download, email or mail a finished form. Building and previewing forms is free, downloading or re-sending the same form again is free, and generating the same form with the same details does not charge twice. Mailing by USPS adds 1 credit per letter.

When is a DAS-140 due?

Within 10 days of signing the public works contract, and no later than the first day you have workers on the job. If you are approved to train, it goes to your own apprenticeship committee; if not, to every applicable committee for your craft in the area of the job. It is not sent to the Division of Apprenticeship Standards.

How do I find the apprenticeship committees for a job?

On the project, click Find in DIR directory, pick the county and your craft, and JamFile lists the approved committees from the Department of Industrial Relations directory. Click Use this to add one, or add a committee by hand.

How much notice does a DAS-142 need?

At least 72 hours before the apprentices are needed, not counting weekends and holidays. Except on projects with less than 40 hours of journeyworker work, apprentices are requested in blocks of at least 8 hours. JamFile's dispatch rounds prepare a dated DAS-142 for every committee on the job at once.

Can committees reply to a DAS-142 online?

Yes. When you email a DAS-142 from JamFile, the committee gets a secure link to reply with no account and no login. They can acknowledge it, confirm a dispatch or say they are unable to dispatch, and the answer appears on your project.

Can JamFile mail my forms?

Yes. JamFile prints and mails each form by USPS First-Class Mail, with a cover sheet carrying your company's details, and shows the tracking status as the letter moves through the mail. Each letter costs 1 credit on top of the form's first credit.

Does JamFile work with QuickBooks?

Yes, with QuickBooks Online. Connect once and JamFile reads your company details, customers and jobs, and vendors to fill your company profile, projects and address book. The connection is read-only: JamFile never changes anything in QuickBooks, and you can disconnect at any time.

What does the form assistant do?

Check these forms reads every field on your forms and lists blanks, dates that miss a deadline and details that do not match, each linked to its field. Fill from a document reads a contract or purchase order you upload and suggests values with the page each one came from. It only suggests: nothing changes until you accept it.

Are these the official forms?

Yes. JamFile fills the Division of Apprenticeship Standards' own DAS-140 and DAS-142 PDFs, the statutory lien waiver forms from Civil Code sections 8132 to 8138, and standard California preliminary notices.
